Position description
Public Health Scientist with Expertise in Disparities and Health Behavior
The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for one or more faculty positions in the area of Disparities and Health Behavior. Individuals with expertise in community-based approaches to understanding and/or reducing disparities in health behavior, and experience working with underserved communities, are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate(s) will (a) be a major contributor to the Center of Excellence on Health Behaviors in Underserved and Vulnerable Communities and/or (b) take a leadership role and teach in either the undergraduate or graduate public health program . The Department also has an interest in hiring a behavioral scientist with research interests related to nutrition. Candidates should have a PhD or MD with a proven track record in obtaining NIH (or comparable) funding and high productivity with regards to peer-reviewed publications. Rank and series of appointment will be based on skills and qualifications of the candidate, but preference is to make at least one appointment at the associate or full professor level, which will be a tenured position with partial state funding.
UCSD School of Medicine offers a research-intensive environment with multiple opportunities for collaboration with colleagues at the Stein Institute for Research on Aging, the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, the UCSD Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and other departments. There are strong research programs in the Department and opportunities for collaboration on studies of health behaviors in underserved and vulnerable populations, obesity, nutrition interventions, and other health behaviors including physical activity. Successful applicants should place high priority on teaching undergraduate and graduate students in public health as well as medical students and mentoring the next generation of investigators. The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine offers a Ph.D. program in Public Health in collaboration with San Diego State University with foci in health behaviors, epidemiology and global health. The department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
