Position description
The UC San Diego Department of Education Studies (http://eds.ucsd.edu) invites applications for the position of Director, Teacher Education. This is a full-time, non-tenure track appointment (payroll title: Academic Administrator).
The Teacher Education Program (TEP) in the Department of Education Studies is committed to preparing aspiring teachers to create and promote justice-oriented learning environments through participation in and collaboration with diverse school communities. TEP offers several undergraduate and graduate pathways that culminate in preliminary teaching credentials and Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees, including Multiple Subject Education, Single Subject Education (Science, Mathematics, English Language Arts, and World Languages), Bilingual Authorization, and Education Specialist Credential in American Sign Language - English Bilingual Education.
We seek a dynamic and forward-looking Director of Teacher Education to sustain and build upon our regional and national reputation. The Director will provide leadership and administrative oversight for curriculum and instruction across all the Departments’ teacher education programs, foster excellence in teaching, and effectively represent program constituents at local, regional, state, and national meetings. Core responsibilities include:
- Coordinate and write reports, program proposals, and assessments of the teacher education programs and courses as part of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing accreditation process;
- Oversee program recruitment, admissions, and scholarship processes;
- Manage the annual budget, program expenditures, and fundraising efforts;
- Coordinate student teaching, resident, and internship placements and manage school district partnerships;
- Monitor student teacher progress and address student conduct issues and faculty concerns;
- Mentor and provide support to faculty related to teaching and supervision;
- Teach Credential and/or Master’s level courses.

Qualifications
- Doctorate in education or a related field with explicit connections to education;
- Minimum three years K-12 public school teaching experience;
- Knowledge of teacher education policy and practice in California;
- Record of supporting teacher preparation and development in the service of diverse, marginalized communities;
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and educational transformation.
- Knowledge of California state teaching standards (TPEs), California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA), teacher credentialing requirements, and accreditation processes;
- Valid and current clear California teaching credential;
- Experience teaching and/or collaborating with multilingual children, youth, and families;
- Minimum three years experience supervising, guiding, or coaching educators;
- Minimum three years experience leading, coordinating, or managing educational programs;
- Evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education and/or teacher preparation commensurate with experience;
- Established record of relationship-building and partnership activity with K-12 public school and/or school district administrators;
- Experience applying current theories and research related to teacher education and development in culturally and linguistically diverse instructional or programmatic settings;
- Background in administration, personnel management, and budgeting;
- Vision and creativity around program development, student recruitment, and external funding.
