Position description

The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego (https://hwsph.ucsd.edu/) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for an Associate Professor rank faculty position in Climate Change and Planetary Health associated with our Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) and Master of Public Health (MPH) programs.

The School has focal areas of Behavioral Medicine, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Policy, Health Equity, Public Mental Health, and Climate and Environmental Health and offers teaching and student mentoring opportunities in our BSPH, MPH, PhD in Public Health (administered jointly with San Diego State University), and MS and PhD in Biostatistics degree programs. Further, the School has an MAS in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UCSD Extension and a Preventive Medicine Residency program. The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on Health Promotion and Equity, Women's Health, Tobacco Control, and Wireless and Population Health Systems and has extensive collaborations with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, Jacobs School of Engineering, Moores Cancer Center, the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School houses five recharge cores providing services to both UCSD and the external community, and the School’s faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.

Candidates must have a PhD, DrPH, or related doctoral degree. Competitive candidates must have current extramural funding, strong publications appropriate for the Associate rank, and a proven track record in obtaining extramural funding. Competitive candidates must also have a demonstrated experience in teaching courses relevant to climate change and planetary health.

The successful candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in climate change and planetary health; and must have experience developing courses related to climate change and planetary health, including for example spatial epidemiology and advanced topics in GIS and remote sensing, introduction to urban health, environmental epidemiology methods or exposure assessment.

Candidates with experience in environmental justice or community-based research are preferred.

Candidates are required to show a demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity by submitting a Diversity Statement of past contributions and/or future plans of excellence in this area as part of their application for an academic appointment.

Appointment will be at the Associate Professor rank. Series will be 50% Ladder Rank (Tenured) / 50% In-Residence. Appointment requires candidates to be partially self-funded, e.g., with grants.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited.
