Position description

The Department of Pathology at the University of California San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body seeks a physician-scientist or PhD clinician-scientist faculty member to join the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine and serve as the Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology and Virology Laboratories.

The Department of Pathology and the Infectious Diseases and Global Health communities at UC San Diego are highly collaborative groups.

The Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology and Virology Laboratories is expected to share clinical responsibilities and contribute to the leadership of the Clinical Microbiology and Virology Laboratories, at the state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine and the UC San Diego Health Clinical Laboratories at Jacobs Medical Center-La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Center. All faculty are required to participate in the University's educational mission, by engaging in the teaching of medical/graduate students, residents, or fellows.

Furthermore, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain a research program in the area of microbial pathogenesis and/or antimicrobial drug development and compete for extramural grant support; ample time will be made available for research.

Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, PhD or equivalent degree(s). Candidates with an MD must have or be board certified/board eligible in Pathology, Infectious Diseases, and/or Medical Microbiology, with expertise in diagnostic microbiology and virology. Candidates with an MD must have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California. All candidates must meet the applicable requirements and be eligible for California laboratory director licensure in the subspecialty of clinical microbiology.

Candidates with a demonstrated track record of scholarly achievement, research excellence, and interest in contributing to the exceptional programs in microbial pathogenesis at UC San Diego are preferred.

The appropriate series and appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor Rank based on candidate's experience and qualifications. Series will include Ladder Rank, In-Residence with secured extramural funding, Clinical X, HS Clinical and Adjunct.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded. As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited.
