With a commitment to excellence and diversity, the Department of Education Studies (EDS) at the University of California San Diego ( invites applications for a Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment equivalent to “tenure-track” in the area of Computer Science Education starting July 1, 2019. The teaching faculty series at UC San Diego carries equivalent rights to the more traditional UC San Diego research-focused faculty series. Faculty in this series are expected to place a strong emphasis on teaching and scholarly activity related to education rather than on traditional disciplinary research activities. The normal teaching load for these faculty is six courses per year.

Our mission of Transforming Education in a Diverse Society informs our courses, research, and professional activities in the Department of Education Studies. The successful candidate will teach multiple computer science teacher preparation courses to support a proposed undergraduate minor in Computer Science Education. These courses address content, pedagogy and equity in an integrated fashion. Additional courses which the candidate might teach include courses to support Education Studies’ proposed new major including quantitative and/or qualitative methods and an explorations in education course which serves as an introductory course in the major. Other courses potentially of interest to the candidate include equity in STEM education, cognitive development, online and computer-supported learning environments, design-based research, action research, learning science, and introductory programming for computational social science.

Other responsibilities for this position will include:

-Serving as appropriate on graduate student masters and doctoral committees.
-Participating in administrative functions of the department and the University as needed.

Required qualifications include:

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in education or
  • Ph.D. in a computing or STEM-related discipline with a focus on computing education

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or Ed.D degree or have advanced to candidacy at the time of application.

The successful candidate will have knowledge specifically of computing education or a combination of educational research and practices with programming and computer science proficiency.

Strongly desired qualifications include a focus on equity, engagement with national efforts around Computer Science in K-12, and K-12 teaching experience. Desired qualifications include: interest and/or experience in online teaching and educational technology, experience working with undergraduates in service learning programs, and higher education teaching.

Salary: The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary will be based on University of California pay scales.
