The Department of Physics within the Division of Physical Sciences at UCSD (http://www-physics.ucsd.edu/) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body, and invites applications from qualified individuals for an Assistant or Associate Project Scientist. The UCSD Experimental Elementary Particle Physics group is expanding efforts in the Data Acquisition System of the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland.
The successful applicant will take on leadership roles in the DAQ of CMS; will take responsibility for the network monitoring maintenance and tests; will interface with the system managers for the configuration of the network switches; and will evaluate, deploy and commission future upgrades of the CMS DAQ system.
The successful applicant will be requested to have or to gain enough experience in the DAQ system to take on-call shifts. The position will be based at CERN and weekends or evening/night shift work will be required for experiment operation as needed. Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in Physics (or equivalent), or Computer Science or Engineering Masters (or equivalent), with appropriate experience. Ideally, candidates should have several years of experience in the following areas:
● High speed networking technologies such as 40 and 100 GBit/s Ethernet and high performance computing interconnects such as Infiniband or Omnipath.
● Network management and monitoring
● Design and operation of fault tolerant large scale and high throughput data processing systems
● Programming languages such as C++, Java and Python
● Design and implementation of Web applications
● Server and file systems performance tuning
● Proficiency in usage of relational databases (Oracle, SQL, …)
Experience of working within large-scale international collaborations is especially appreciated and in particular previous experience with the CMS Data Acquisition system.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
