Position description

The University of California, San Diego, Department of Surgery,(http://surgery.ucsd.edu )in conjunction with UC San Diego Health is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body are seeking to recruit a nationally recognized vibrant leader and exceptional surgeon to serve as Chief of the Division of Trauma, Burns, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to lead one of the premier and most influential programs in the country. UC San Diego Health operates two university inpatient hospitals in La Jolla and downtown San Diego (Hillcrest) within which members of the division provide care for critically injured patients and surgical patients in the intensive care environment as well as those with acute general surgery needs. Hillcrest houses our level 1 trauma center which admits more than 2,300 patients annually and the region's only dedicated burn facility with more than 400 index admissions annually. The division staffs Surgical Intensive Care units in both locations and has a robust acute and elective general surgery practice in Hillcrest.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative leader who is able to work across surgical and medical disciplines in the pursuit of optimal multidisciplinary team-based care. The successful candidate will be a distinguished clinician with a proven record in clinical program building and whose accomplishments in research and education are nationally recognized. Commensurate with leadership experience and ability, there is an opportunity to serve in the role of Surgeon-in-Chief for the Hillcrest facility working in partnership with the Chairs of the surgical departments and UC San Diego Health leadership to drive quality and programmatic growth of the respective Hillcrest surgical service lines.

Candidates must have an MD, able to secure a California Medical License and be board-certified in General Surgery with a solid track record of management and leadership and eligible for appointment at either the Associate of Full Professor ranks. Candidates must have a track record of practice changing innovation and a vision for moving the fields of trauma, burn and surgical critical care.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.
