Description

Part time non-tenure track lectureships with the Dimensions of Culture Writing Program with Thurgood Marshall College, UC San Diego, will be available for the 2018-19 academic year. Appointments vary from one to three quarters. Instructors will teach the upper division DOC course, DOC 100D, which provides a broad overview of the histories of multiple communities and explores the struggle for social justice in the United States.

Topics include:
-social movements
-shifting ideologies of class, "race," and gender
-the rise of corporate power
-the transformation of higher education.

Students will learn to analyze and discuss historical artifacts that range from essays on gender and racialization to autobiography to video and film.

Our ideal candidate will have a M.A. or terminal degree in a pertinent field with research experience in intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and other categories of difference in U.S. society, history, and culture, solid teaching experience in composition or other writing programs in a University setting, and demonstrated strong leadership or commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting.

Thurgood Marshall's Writing Program, “Dimensions of Culture—Diversity, Justice, and Imagination (DOC),” challenges students to develop a historically grounded understanding of the diverse experiences that have shaped U.S. culture. The distinctive core sequence, which serves as the centerpiece of the general education requirements, emphasizes a deep examination of American society. DOC is designed to be an interdisciplinary curriculum that explores the promise of the nation’s founding ideals juxtaposed to collective struggles to realize those ideals for all communities. DOC 100D is open to Thurgood Marshall College transfer (IGETC) students, as well as Juniors and Seniors from the other five colleges. It satisfies UCSD’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion requirement.
