Description

Part time non-tenure track lectureships with the Making of the Modern World Writing Program, Eleanor Roosevelt College, UC San Diego, will be available for the 2018-19 academic year. Appointments vary from one to three quarters. Instructors will teach one (or more) of the lower or upper division courses. Our ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in a Humanities or Social Science field, solid teaching experience teaching world history at the University level, and demonstrated strong leadership or commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting.

The academic work of ERC students is further shaped by the requirements for their chosen field of study, selected from among the more than 150 majors available at UC San Diego. About one-third of each entering class at ERC will spend time abroad.

ERC focuses on international understanding and engagement and its students complete a core general education sequence called the Making of the Modern World, among other GE requirements. The Making of the Modern World (MMW) program is an academic unit housed within Eleanor Roosevelt College. As the general education course sequence for ERC, MMW provides an interdisciplinary overview of the world from the emergence of the human species to the present. MMW is an academic expression of the mission of ERC, which is, in part, “to feature dimensions of international understanding and cultural diversity.” We are committed to ensuring that our graduates, who come from all academic disciplines, have a basic understanding of the diverse human experience that has shaped our world. MMW provides that understanding, while also teaching research and writing skills critical for academic success at the university. Students entering UC San Diego as freshmen take a five-course sequence from MMW 11 to MMW 15. Transfer students, entering UC San Diego as upper-classmen and having already fulfilled the college writing requirement, take a two-course transfer sequence, MMW 121 and MMW 122. MMW courses are taught during the academic year and during the summer.
