The Department of Family Medicine and Public Health (FMPH) at the University of California, San Diego’s School of Medicine ( is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications for a faculty position within the Division of Preventive Medicine. Applicant could also be considered for a leadership position in the Division or Department. Candidates must have either an MD, with an MPH preferred, a PhD, or other applicable doctoral degree and expertise in cardiovascular disease epidemiology and related morbidities, such as diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, and chronic kidney disease.

Candidates must also have robust extramurally funded research programs as well as publications that have impacted the field of cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention, and should place high priority on teaching medical and graduate students and mentoring the next generation of investigators. Appointments at the 100% ladder rank will come with specific teaching obligations in one of the Department’s degree programs or may be a joint appointment with an affiliated Department. Applicants with experience working with multi-ethnic populations are particularly encouraged to apply. UC San Diego School of Medicine offers a research-intensive environment with multiple opportunities for collaboration with colleagues at the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and with other UC San Diego departments and research groups. Rank of appointment will be based on skills and qualifications of the candidate.

The Department of Family Medicine and Public Health has over 100 faculty and houses seven Centers of Excellence: Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention, Energy Balance, Obesity and Cancer Prevention; Health Promotion and Equity; Research and Intervention in Tobacco Control; Wireless and Population Health Systems, Research and Training in Integrative Health, and Women’s Health. The Division also houses a T32 training program in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention. The candidate is expected to participate actively in the Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention Center of Excellence and to build inter-programmatic collaborations. The Department offers a Ph.D. program in Public Health in collaboration with San Diego State University with concentrations in Epidemiology, Health Behavior, Global Health, and Biostatistics, and an undergraduate degree in Public Health. The Department seeks candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in research, teaching, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. UC San Diego is located in La Jolla, California, just north of San Diego. San Diego is an ethnically diverse city, edged with seventy miles of beaches, and is known for a superb climate.

Appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor rank. Series will include 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence or 100% Ladder Rank (with secured extramural funding). Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
