Position description

The University of California, San Diego, Warren College Writing Program (WCWP) is currently looking for a dynamic Assistant Director with a strong record of teaching excellence to begin in August, 2017. The Assistant Director will be responsible for leadership and teaching in a lively, growing, first-year writing program that focuses on the study of ethics, justice and society.

We are interested in a candidate that has a minimum of one-year of service in a leadership capacity in a writing center or program. We are also interested in a scholar that has any combination of the following research and teaching interests: composition and rhetoric studies; writing program administration and assessment; digital/multimodal writing; public writing; social justice rhetoric/writing.

Primary Duties
As an administrator, the Assistant Director’s primary duties include curricular development and pedagogical planning, as well as providing support, guidance and mentoring of Teaching Assistants (TAs), Non-Student Tutors, and Lecturers. In association with the Director, the Assistant Director designs program assessment methods, plans weekly TA meetings, and implements the Fall seminar and TA Orientation. In addition, the Assistant Director will be actively engaged in the recruitment of prospective TAs and Lecturers.

In the classroom, the Assistant Director will also design and teach three sections of “Warren Writing 100” each year. Warren Writing 100 is a course required for all Warren College transfer students.

This is an academic-year (9-month) appointment with the eligibility of continued appointment per UC guidelines.

Hiring Salary Range: $49,500-$61,848 (Salary commensurate with experience) *Opportunities to teach in the summer may be available for additional compensation.

Required Qualifications-
• A Ph.D. or terminal graduate degree in Composition, Rhetoric, English, Literature or related field with significant knowledge of the pedagogy of composition (degree must be conferred by July 1, 2017)
• A minimum of one year of service in a leadership role in a writing center or writing program
• A record of distinguished teaching in composition or other writing programs at the college level
• Familiarity with writing program assessment methods
• Experience in curricular planning and development
• Excellent organizational abilities to plan, prioritize and balance multiple projects/tasks
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
• Ability to work effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, and students
• Strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience and interest in teaching writing to STEM students and multimodal writing
-Familiarity with L2 pedagogical theories and methods
-Knowledge of research about how students learn in higher education
-Experience teaching in a research university is desirable

Warren College Writing Program courses are designed to encourage the intellectual habits and practices that will give students a solid foundation for success in written and oral communication at the university and beyond. WCWP courses teach students, through intensive practice, to read critically and present academic arguments. These seminar style classes engage students in the scholarly practices necessary for effectively communicating arguments and other ideas. Students receive individual feedback not only from their instructors but also from their peers.
