Eleanor Roosevelt College at the University of California, San Diego is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications from candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment. Founded in 1988 as UC San Diego’s fifth college, Eleanor Roosevelt College was named in 1994 for the former First Lady, delegate to the United Nations, chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights, and member of the Peace Corps Advisory Council. The college motto of "Developing Global Citizens through Scholarship, Leadership and Service” is exemplified in the curricular and co-curricular components of the college. The 4000 students at Eleanor Roosevelt College develop an unusually strong sense of intellectual and social community as they complete a series of general requirements designed to provide a broad, multicultural perspective. The academic work of ERC students is further shaped by the requirements for their chosen field of study, selected from among the more than 150 majors available at UC San Diego. About one-third of each entering class at ERC will spend time abroad.

ERC focuses on international understanding and engagement and its students complete a core general education sequence called the Making of the Modern World, among other GE requirements. The Making of the Modern World (MMW) program is an academic unit housed within Eleanor Roosevelt College. As the general education course sequence for ERC, MMW provides an interdisciplinary overview of the world from the emergence of the human species to the present. MMW is an academic expression of the mission of ERC, which is, in part, “to feature dimensions of international understanding and cultural diversity.” We are committed to ensuring that our graduates, who come from all academic disciplines, have a basic understanding of the diverse human experience that has shaped our world. MMW provides that understanding, while also teaching research and writing skills critical for academic success at the university. Students entering UC San Diego as freshmen take a five-course sequence from MMW 11 to MMW 15. Transfer students, entering UC San Diego as upper-classmen and having already fulfilled the college writing requirement, take a two-course transfer sequence, MMW 121 and MMW 122. MMW courses are taught during the academic year and during the summer.
