UC San Diego is inviting applications for a full-time position as Associate Director of Basic Writing. The Associate Director will work in the role of Academic Coordinator and Lecturer, teaching in the Basic Writing Program. The Associate Director (AD) reports to the Director of Basic Writing and will work closely with the Basic Writing faculty and administrative team.

Under the general guidance of the Director of Basic Writing, the incumbent is expected to: help build and maintain a program dedicated to best practices in the teaching of Basic Writing; support our diverse student population; support the Basic Writing faculty by developing resources and co-facilitating professional development sessions; assist in program assessment; and promote a program culture that encourages excellence and rigor in the teaching and learning of writing. The Associate Director is also expected to be an effective teacher who can enact the program’s principles and practices in his or her classroom.

Job functions:
• Help the Director of Basic Writing to design the program’s curriculum, methods, syllabus, and assignments
• Assist the Director in observing and evaluating the Basic Writing faculty and graduate Teaching Assistants; help prepare promotion files for the Unit 18 lecturers
• Supervise and evaluate the Basic Writing Curriculum Coordinator
• Support professional development of the faculty by developing resources, co-facilitating professional development meetings, and mentoring faculty new to the program
• Train the faculty to score the Analytical Writing Placement Exam; supervise the exam; report the results to the Program Office
• Participate in the reading and scoring of student portfolios
• Implement program assessment, as designed by the director; help the director evaluate the data
• Coordinate our academic integrity policies and practices; assist faculty in filing academic integrity charges; design lessons/workshops on writing with integrity
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the Basic Writing Program and with other campus offices and programs; promote the program’s values and objectives
• Recommend innovations to the program; assist in development efforts
• Teach in the Basic Writing Program

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D in Composition or related field
• University teaching experience in Composition, including experience teaching basic and ELL writers
• Evidence of scholarly accomplishment
• Current knowledge of effective, evidence-based practices and emerging trends in teaching and learning in Composition; ability to apply these practices to the curriculum and to faculty development
• Evidence of the ability to guide faculty and graduate teaching assistance regarding matters of teaching
• Strong communication skills and service-oriented approach to individuals at all levels and across disciplines
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, academic units, faculty, graduate students, and staff
• Experience using academic technologies, such as learning management systems
• Experience in program or institutional evaluation at the university level
• A commitment to diversity and to ensuring the success of groups historically underrepresented in higher education

This is an academic year position. This employment opportunity is for a two year appointment but may result in a renewable appointment at UC San Diego. Salary commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
