In this initiative, traditional normative ethical concerns are embedded in cross-disciplinary research areas such as the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences, geosciences, engineering, business, and medicine. Besides Social Impact of Science, Medicine, and Technology, there are at present three other areas of focus within the overall initiative: (1) Environmental Justice; (2) Health Care Ethics; and (3) Business Ethics.

These areas include the Divisions of Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, the School of Global Policy and Strategy, the Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Rady School of Management, and the School of Medicine.
The university is particularly interested in recruiting candidates who display the highest standards of excellence in research, teaching and professional activity in the social impact of science, medicine, and technology.
