Position description

The Division of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (http://ctsurgery.ucsd.edu) in the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego, is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and is seeking a thoracic surgical oncologist at the Associate Professor level or higher with a focus on clinical care and research in the area of lung cancer. The successful candidate will direct the surgical programs in thoracic malignancies at UCSD and its affiliates as well as the San Diego VA Medical Center. An interest in the cellular lineage of lung cancer and role of stem cell directed therapies is particularly sought so as to take advantage of unique research collaborations within the UCSD environment. This individual will also have a leadership position in the thoracic malignancy program at the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moores Cancer Center at UCSD. This position is a full-time tenured faculty position (academic rank to be determined based upon experience). Series will include 50% Ladder Rank and 50% In-Residence with secured extramural funding.

Applicants must have completed formal training in Cardiothoracic Surgery, be eligible to practice medicine in California, and be board certified/eligible in Cardiothoracic Surgery. The candidate must have expertise and a prior high volume experience in independently performing minimally invasive major pulmonary and esophageal resections in the context of a large academic medical center with resident and fellow trainees. The candidate must also be a surgeon-scientist with a track record of translational research focusing on the molecular pathogenesis of lung cancer including novel directed therapeutics. Evidence of a successful research career would be gauged by independent funding, quality publications within the surgical and broader basic and translational scientific journals, and through references from leading figures in the field. The optimal candidate will have additional experience working in the Veterans Affairs Health System. The division is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. Review of applications will begin February 19, 2016 and continue until the position is filled.
