Position description

THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO, Department of Structural Engineering (SE, http://structures.ucsd.edu), has opened a search for a tenure-track faculty member in the area of STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING AND PROGNOSIS. Specific topics of interest are: sensing approaches for existing and new smart structures; prognosis tools for informed decision-making; physics-based structural health monitoring modeling; structural damage progression modeling and remaining useful life estimation including probabilistic approaches; robustness, resilience and sustainability of the built environment; retrofit of existing structures; life-cycle cost analysis of structures. Application areas of interest include civil, aerospace, and marine structures, among others. A successful candidate will have the ability to teach high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses, develop an active and well-funded research program, and form synergistic connections with other areas of the Department and University. The position is expected to be filled at the Assistant Professor level; however, exceptionally qualified candidates at the Associate and Full Professor levels may be also considered. An earned doctoral degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or engineering mechanics is required.

The Department of Structural Engineering currently has 23 faculty members, 173 graduate students, 700 undergraduate students, and approximately $7.5M annual research expenditures. The SE Department houses unparalleled large-scale testing facilities, including the Charles Lee Powell Structural Systems Laboratories, the large outdoor shake table, a blast simulation facility, a Caltrans soil-structure-interaction facility, a rail defect testing facility, the Caltrans 6-DOF shake table for structural response modification devices, and a 100g geotechnical centrifuge. In addition to the large-scale laboratories, the Department hosts a number of smaller testing laboratories for studies spanning from the nanomaterial level to the structural component level. For SE Department specific inquiries, contact the Chair of the Search Committee, Prof. Francesco Lanza di Scalea (flanza@ucsd.edu).

The Department of Structural Engineering within the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego is committed to building an excellent, diverse, and inclusive faculty, staff and student body. In addition to having the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity, the preferred candidates will have experience or demonstrated contributions to a climate that supports equity, inclusion and diversity (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity/).
