Position description

The Department of History in the School of Arts & Humanities at UC San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position specializing in South Asian History. We welcome applications from scholars focusing on any period, topic, thematic area, religion, nation or region within South Asia, including the pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial periods, diasporic communities, and anti-casteist, anti-Islamophobic approaches. Specialists in Indian Ocean History or other inter-regional fields are particularly encouraged to apply. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024. Duties include active research, graduate supervision, classroom teaching at all levels, and department and university service. The successful candidate will be charged with crafting a foundational curriculum in South Asian History. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Must be at least ABD in History or related discipline at time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Must possess a PhD in History or related discipline by time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications

Evidence of excellence in teaching commensurate with experience, and publications appropriate to the candidate’s experience. Candidates with demonstrated strong leadership in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic settings.
