Program Overview:
The Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment and Teaching Excellence (CREATE) at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) houses several teacher professional development programs for prospective and practicing teachers, student educational outreach, and educational research and evaluation services programs.

Job Description of Educational Technology & Computer Science K-14 Program and Research Coordinator (Academic Coordinator I or II):

This position calls for the successful candidate to coordinate existing EdTech/CS programming within CREATE. The Academic Coordinator will work to increase the visibility, quantity, and quality of CREATE’s existing educational technology and computer science programming for underserved and underrepresented students and their educators. They do this by continuing to leverage existing UC San Diego resources and outside resources (through partnerships, such as industries, K12 schools, and nonprofits) to maximize UC San Diego’s campus reach to historically underrepresented communities, with a special emphasis on delivering services to UC San Diego’s Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) and TRIO target populations.

In addition, the Academic Coordinator will catalyze/create new opportunities for K14 students in educational technology- and computer science-related programming, with a special emphasis on delivering services to UC San Diego’s EAOP and TRIO target populations. The candidate will catalyze/create new opportunities for educators (administrators, teachers, and counselors) within the areas of educational technology- and computer science-related programming, with a special emphasis on delivering services to K14 institutions serving UC San Diego’s EAOP and TRIO target populations;

Lastly, the Academic Coordinator will identify and secure new resources to support staffing and programming to achieve the goals mentioned above, including collaboration with UC San Diego faculty, staff, student groups, non-profits, philanthropy, service contracts, grants, etc. In addition, they will stay up-to-date with and contribute to the latest research, knowledge, and practices in EdTech/CS education, particularly as it relates to the needs of historically underrepresented communities.

Overview of Responsibilities:
The role will have multiple areas of responsibility.

OVERSIGHT OF EXISTING CREATE EDTech/CS PROGRAMS

The Academic Coordinator (AC) oversees and/or supports EXISTING educational technology and computer science programs within CREATE, including but not limited to Code.org, GirlsWhoCode, San Diego-Computer Science Teachers Association (SD-CSTA), and the NCWIT Aspire IT program. The AC plans and delivers CS/Ed Tech outreach programming in the broader San Diego Region with the aforementioned programs.

The AC serves local partner institutions in K-12, community colleges, and 4-year institutions with the programs mentioned earlier. Develop and maintain an inclusive working rapport with each of the programs, as mentioned earlier. The AC ensures high quality, timely, and on-budget programming is delivered by the aforementioned programs deliver programming. The AC specifically distributes these opportunities and programs to UC San Diego EAOP and TRIO students in ways that maximize the participation of their target audiences.

INNOVATION OF NEW CREATE EDTech/CS PROGRAMS

The Academic Coordinator must write/submit funding applications (e.g., grants, service contracts, philanthropic awards, etc.) to support NEW Ed Tech/CS outreach initiatives led by CREATE.

The Academic Coordinator consults with UC San Diego faculty, staff, and student groups when funded to help them design and execute new collaborative educational technology and Computer Science educational programming that serves diverse students and teacher populations. The AC must create new Ed Tech/CS opportunities that address the educational and career needs of UC San Diego EAOP and TRIO students as appropriate and maximize the participation of their target audiences.

OVERALL PROGRAMS: EXISTING AND NEW

The Academic Coordinator must ensure all programs recruit and address the needs of underrepresented and diverse students, including special populations within historically marginalized and underrepresented communities (e.g., food- and housing-insecure K14 students, etc.). Specifically, the AC provides targeted outreach and service to students and their teachers from UC San Diego’s EAOP and TRIO programs. The AC works closely with EAOP and TRIO staff through individually led presentations, hands-on demonstrations, workshops, and organized panel presentations to communities of students and families.

The AC directs and coordinates educator professional development relating to CS and Educational Technology programs for San Diego regional educators, especially those who serve predominantly low-income and underrepresented student populations. The AC manages advertisement for teacher- and student-facing existing and new Ed Tech/CS programs when necessary to ensure targeted high-need populations are enrolled at satisfactory levels, including from UC San Diego’s EAOP and TRIO programs and the teachers of the schools they serve

As one of the pioneers in both research and practice, the AC continues to research and disseminate information about Ed Tech/CS programming in progress and/or accomplished via blogs, articles, written and oral reports, presentations, etc., to local stakeholders, including county office, district, and school leaders, and higher education campus administrators. The AC collects and analyzes evaluation and assessment data pre- and post-programs when funding for programming allows

The AC mentors undergraduate and graduate students the AC funds, recruits, and works with to enact programming. Work closely with university student groups, particularly from STEM areas, when requested to support their outreach initiatives as related to Educational Technology and/or Computer Science. In addition, the AC collaborates with regional and state colleagues on cutting-edge technological developments, such as Esports, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, etc.

Finally, the AC represents CREATE at meetings on and off the UC San Diego campus at local, regional, statewide and national meetings as needed, as the AC adheres to UC San Diego policies and procedures regarding Principles of Community and university policies regarding finances, safety, behavior, and attendance.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (Required at Time of Application)

A doctoral degree (Ed.D. or Ph.D.) in an education or STEM-education field is required.

Preferred qualifications

A minimum of 3 years experience coordinating educational technology and/or computer science-related K14 programs within a context of higher education (2 or 4-year college/university).

Extensive knowledge of UC San Diego’s Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) and TRIO-targeted programs.

A minimum of 3 years experience in education, research, and/or teaching.

A minimum of 3 years experience with grant writing, fundraising, and budget management.
