Position title: Assistant Teaching Professor

Position description

THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS, within the Division of Physical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego (www.physics.ucsd.edu), is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body and invites applications for an Excellence search, which includes a faculty position as Assistant Teaching Professor. Faculty in the Teaching Professor series (sometimes referred to as a Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment) are Academic Senate members whose expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education, as well as scholarly analysis and improvement of teaching. We are seeking outstanding teachers who wish to have a permanent, full-time instructional position on an academic-year basis. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute in the following domains:
• Teaching of truly exceptional quality; emphasis on large-enrollment introductory lecture and laboratory courses.
• Professional achievement and activity; such as developing curriculum, using instructional technology to enhance student learning, awareness of developments in pedagogical methods, collaborating with members of the department on pedagogical techniques and course content, and contributing to efforts to secure extramural funding for educational program development.
• University and public service; such as participating in campus and departmental committees, student outreach and recruitment, and providing academic advice relating to student affairs.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scale.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

-Candidates must have a Ph.D in physics (any area) or a closely related scientific field.
-Demonstrated excellence in a recognized program.
-Demonstrated excellence in both teaching and physics education.
-Demonstrated excellence in written communication and interpersonal communication skills.

PhD must be in hand prior by the time the appointment begins.

-Demonstrates a well-crafted plan of contribution to campus initiatives and programs which enhance diversity, equity and inclusivity efforts on campus (http://diversity.ucsd.edu/).
