Position description

FACULTY POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UC SAN DIEGO – Marine Natural Products and Chemical Biology

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor position. We seek a motivated, broad-thinking scientist/educator to establish a vigorous research program and provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise at SIO and other UC San Diego departments. SIO is a world-renowned institution for Earth and ocean science research with approximately 200 principal investigators. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to inclusion by providing leadership in teaching, mentoring, research, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, develop new courses that promote student knowledge of marine natural products and chemical biology, and train the next generation of researchers.

Candidates should have a history of innovative research activities at the intersection of marine natural products and human health. We will consider applicants with a marine focus from a broad range of fields including, but not limited to: natural products chemistry, biocatalysis, synthetic biology, pharmacology, and chemical ecology. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong extramurally supported research program that integrates with and aids the growth of existing marine natural products research at SIO and UC San Diego, and, in particular, at the Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine (CMBB, https://scripps.ucsd.edu/cmbb).

Applications will be evaluated for research productivity, past and future funding, alignment with priorities, experience and plans for teaching and mentoring, leadership and scientific vision, service, and promotion of equity, diversity and inclusiveness.

We intend to fill one position, at either the Assistant (tenure track) or Associate/Full (tenured) level, although there is a preference for those at early career stages. Institutional procedures require separate applications for untenured and tenured levels. Candidates who are unsure of their appropriate level are encouraged to apply at both levels. The Assistant position is found at: https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF03455
