Position description
Assistant Professor of ACTING/DIRECTING-UC San Diego
THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE at UC San Diego (http://theatre.ucsd.edu) invites theatre artists to apply for a tenure-track faculty position within the Ladder Rank Series. The academic appointment for this position will be for an Assistant Professor of ACTING/DIRECTING effective July 1, 2023 and instruction beginning September 2023 (Fall Quarter).
The Department of Theatre and Dance at UC San Diego, located on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay nation, invites applicants who specialize in ACTING with the ability to DIRECT in our season. The Department is pursuing a candidate who can participate in an exciting three year acting progression as part of our MFA program, teach various acting classes in our vibrant Undergraduate program, as well as contribute to our campus General Education offerings. In addition to the acting progression and directing, there are various opportunities within the Department for Faculty to devise, choreograph (fight, intimacy, dance), and pursue other interests that align with one's areas of expertise.
As a department, we believe theater and dance are transformational art forms that have the power and promise to change individuals and society. To amplify this mission, and to contribute to our culturally diverse creative community, the department strongly encourages applications from artists who engage across a range of cultural perspectives and training modalities, including those from the people of the global majority, LGBTQIA+ practitioners, women, and especially those who have significant experience with a variety of acting and directing pedagogies.
Professorial appointment/advancement at UCSD requires ongoing high quality and significant creative activity. Position includes an expectation to participate in all facets of the graduate and undergraduate acting programs. Duties include recruitment, casting, curriculum, periodic directing of department productions, university service, and a desire to invest in continuing to build and grow with the acting area.
Given the department's attention to curriculum that includes production, we are interested in recruiting and supporting an applicant who has a practice in acting and directing and can mentor MFA and selected undergraduate students in that practice.
