Life and Health Sciences Collection Strategist/Liaison Librarian
Collection Development & Management Program
The University of California San Diego Library seeks applications from highly motivated, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professionals to join the Library as our Life and Health Sciences Collection Strategist/Liaison Librarian (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). The specific subject liaison assignment will be determined by the strengths and experience of the successful candidate and the needs of the Library. This position reports to the Director of the Library’s Collection Development & Management Program (CDM).

Responsibilities of the Position
Life and Health Sciences Collection Strategist (60%)
Collections within life and health sciences support the School of Medicine, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, the School of Biological Sciences and affiliates at UC San Diego Health and related interdisciplinary areas.
Key responsibilities include:
● Oversees budget allocations and expenditures for the Life and Health Sciences funds. Provides collections-related information, direction, support, and training to the life and health sciences subject librarians.
● Provides leadership and guidance in envisioning the future direction of collections including budget sustainability, open access initiatives, and content digitization.
● Reviews and provides feedback for new resources, renewals, and cancellations. Provides campus input on UC-wide licensed resources.
● Represents Life and Health Science interests on scholarly communication issues. Participates in local and UC system-wide groups for scholarly communications, open access, and transformative agreements.
● Represents Life and Health Sciences subjects in decision-making for the physical collections footprint. Coordinates weeding and space-optimization projects for existing physical collections. Provides input and recommendations in managing physical collections in the context of UC Shared Print Initiatives and other regional and national consortia.
● Represents the Library on the UC Health & Life Sciences Common Knowledge Group (comprised of selectors and librarians with responsibilities for life and health sciences collections at other UC campuses). Participate in, and in some cases, coordinate licensing terms and agreements for resources with publishers and other UC Libraries.
● Communicates with representatives from campus Life and Health Sciences entities to advocate for and secure annual funding.
Subject Librarian for assigned subject area (40%)
The specific subject assignment will depend on the experience and background of the successful applicant and the needs of the Library.
Key responsibilities include:
● Serves as the primary contact and information resource on library services, resources, and policies for users in the assigned subject area.
● Provides research consultation, reference, outreach, and instruction services to support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research, teaching and learning endeavors.
● Serves as a resource for information on data services, scholarly communication, and digital scholarship.
● Develops collections to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of students and faculty.
● Collaborates with other subject and functional specialists within the Library to support interdisciplinary Library users in finding resources, analyzing and managing information, and promoting library services in the assigned subject area.

● MLS/MLIS, or equivalent advanced degree or relevant library experience.
● 3 or more years of professional library experience in collection development and management.
● Familiarity with electronic and scholarly resources and reference tools in the Life and Health Sciences.
● Experience providing advanced research assistance and library instruction in the Life and Health Sciences.
● Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication, time management, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
● Experience planning, documenting, and completing projects.
● Demonstrated commitment to excellence in service.
● Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in collection building and scholarly communications.
● Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in the Life, Health, or Biological Sciences.
● Experience with collections budget work, such as managing and overseeing a collections budget, tracking expenditures, and forecasting financial needs.
● Experience with advanced literature searching and consultation support for researchers conducting systematic reviews in the life and health sciences.
● Knowledge of bibliometrics, citation impact analysis, and other scholarly communications analyses.
