The Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for an Associate Teaching Professor to serve as Director of the Jacobs School of Engineering's Experience Engineering Initiative (E4) (https://jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/experience-engineering) and the EnVision Arts and Engineering Maker Studio (https://jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/envision). The ideal candidate would have a strong background in hands-on education, be excited to provide dedicated, visionary leadership for E4 and EnVision, and be ready to help expand the breadth and depth in hands-on Engineering at UC San Diego.

The position’s responsibilities will include leading and expanding the E4 initiative across the school of engineering and working with the educators and leaders of all six engineering departments. The successful candidate will demonstrate innovative teaching methodologies to include the following: experience with hands-on pedagogy in the classroom, working with student orgs and extra-curricular projects, interdisciplinary focus, outreach to underrepresented populations, and increasing participation for all kinds of students.

As the E4 director, the successful candidate’s duties will include teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate students (including mentoring), obtaining resources to further hands-on education, defining and developing a vision for hands-on learning in JSOE, broadening JSOE hands-on education in and/or out of the classroom, fostering the creation of new courses, fostering/formalizing hands-on experience via student organizations, extending hands-on ‘reach’ for JSOE students.

This position will be housed within one or more of the six engineering departments, depending on candidate background and experience (www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/academic/departments.shtml). UCSD Teaching Professor faculty may achieve security of employment (similar to tenure-track) and are expected to do much more than excellent teaching. They have leadership responsibility, not only as teachers, but as facilitators and initiators of instructional development, curriculum design, course structure, teaching methods, new technologies, and coordinating a spectrum of teaching activities. They play a leadership role in teaching in the departments and their disciplines. Further, they provide university and public service in addition to educational leadership beyond the campus and contributions to instruction-related activities.

A candidate for appointment, merit increase, or promotion in this series is judged by the following criteria:

  • Teaching excellence: The demonstration and maintenance of teaching excellence is the primary criterion for the series.
  • Professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, including creative activity.
  • University and public service

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A Ph.D. degree is required in the area of Engineering or a related discipline at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications

Preferred candidates will have demonstrated accomplishments in establish and/or leading initiatives in hands-on engineering education and contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, such as increasing the access and success of underrepresented students or faculty in engineering.
