Position description

The University of California, San Diego, Department of Surgery (https://healthsciences.ucsd.edu/som/surgery/) is committed to excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and seeks to recruit academic surgeons for the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns & Acute Care Surgery (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/som/surgery/divisions/trauma-burn/pages/default.aspx).

The Division leads an ACS-verified Level 1 Trauma Center with 3200 trauma admissions a year, as well as the Regional Burn Center. Surgical Critical Care is practiced in a dedicated 20-bed Trauma and Surgical ICU. The Division also operates a busy Emergency General Surgery service for the campus. An ACGME Surgical Critical Care fellowship is hosted as is an AAST Acute Care Surgery fellowship. The Division also conducts funded basic science research in its own laboratory, clinical research, health services research and educational research. There are extensive simulation facilities for training trauma and operative procedures.

The appointees will participate in the clinical programs and educational activities of the Division, including resident teaching, clinical and multi-institutional research, and University service.

The position will service various UCSD locations. This position will include participation in patient care, teaching, and research and emphasize faculty candidates with outstanding research backgrounds and the ability to have a dedicated research component to their careers.

The appropriate series and appointment at the Assistant, Associate of Full Professor level will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.

As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must have an MD or equivalent and have or be able eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.

Candidates must have documented teaching and research experience in an area relevant to Trauma/Burn, Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery. Candidates must have board certification in General Surgery. Candidates must hold or be eligible for a certificate of added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care.
