The Human Developmental Sciences (HDS) program at the University of California, San Diego is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body. We are currently accepting applications from candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to teach in the 2022-23 academic year as temporary non-tenure track lecturers (Unit 18).
HDS is an interdisciplinary program, examining growth and change from birth through adolescence and into older ages, and is designed to emphasize the idea of development as an essential perspective from which to understand human behavior. An important aspect of the program is the emphasis on the integration of information across different developmental perspectives, including coursework divided into three (3) areas of concentration:
Biological Development, which emphasizes the biological bases of lifespan development, including the sensory and perceptual processes that are basic to our cognitive and social functioning. Courses within this concentration include special topics courses, as well as the following titles:
HDS 110. Brain and Behavioral Development
HDS 111. Evolutionary Principles in Human Development
Cognitive & Linguistic Development, which focuses on intellectual and emotional development across the lifespan. It examines the development of both linguistic and cognitive processes, and the affective and temperamental factors that shape our interaction with others. Courses within this concentration include special topics courses, as well as the following titles:
HDS 120. Language Development
HDS 121. The Developing Mind
HDS 122. Development of Social Cognition
Socio-Cultural Development, which focuses on the influences of culture and context in the field of lifespan development. It examines topics such as family relations, peer interaction, the effects of schooling and literacy and the activities of play, theories of child development, differing cultural perspectives, and social and health policy issues. Courses within this concentration include special topics courses, as well as the following titles:
HDS 133: Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Developmental Science
HDS 171. Diversity in Human Development
HDS 175. Power, Wealth, and Inequality in Human Development
The HDS program also has a full research methodology curriculum that provides advanced-level study on subfields of human development. Courses within this concentration include the following titles:
HDS 60. Intro to Statistical Analysis
HDS 181. Experimental Projects in Human Development Research
HDS 191. Field Research in Human Development
