Content Acquisition and Resource Sharing (CARS)
The University of California, San Diego Library seeks creative, collaborative, and service-oriented applicants for the position of Program Director for our Content Acquisition and Resource Sharing (CARS) Program (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). CARS provides direct support for all activities related to resource acquisition, both print and electronic. This includes providing direct support for consortial acquisitions work serving the collective University of California Libraries’ shared resources. CARS also supports resource sharing activities between University of California campuses, Cal State Universities, and other state and local consortia. This position offers opportunities to provide leadership in CARS strategic program development and to work closely with partner programs and the California Digital Library (CDL) in the development of the Library’s resource holdings.
Responsibilities of the Position
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources and Services (AUL SRS), the Program Director of CARS provides innovative vision, leadership and management for all programmatic, administrative, and operational activities of the unit.
- Lead and manage all staff assigned to CARS including 4 unit heads who oversee specific work areas.
- Ensure cross-program coordination involved in the implementation and delivery of content acquisition and resource sharing services, in particular between this program and the Collection Development and Management program.
- Work closely with the California Digital Library (CDL) in the supervision and work direction of the UCSD Library hosted CDL Acquisitions Division.
- Supervise academic and/or staff employees including hiring, evaluating, training, and developing direct and indirect reports.
- Perform staffing, budget, and resource analysis for the CARS program.
- Support Library collection budget planning working closely with Library Financial Services among others.
- Evolve and modify program scope, services, procedures, and practices consistent with the goals and mission of the Library and in response to program evaluation and assessment, changes in user needs, and changes in available resources.
- Collaborate with other Library programs to fulfill the program’s mission and carry out program activities. An example includes working with Scholarship Tools and Methods to apply repository options for stewardship of digital assets acquired without a management platform.

About the Program
The Content Acquisition and Resource Sharing Program (CARS) supports the university’s mission of research, teaching, and public service by acquiring materials as efficiently as possible and on the best possible terms. CARS provides access to these resources as well as to those not available at UCSD along with offering assistance in using the appropriate tools to locate and/or request such resources. The Program also supports strategic financial analysis for the Library's collections budget. CARS emphasizes efficiency, excellence in customer service, and innovation.
Core roles include:
- Acquiring and licensing print and electronic content in support of the University’s mission
- Receiving and managing cataloging records for all vendor-provided shelf-ready materials, regardless of language, format or location. CARS will download the vendor records at time of receipt (they usually come with electronic invoicing). Metadata Services will handle authority work and establish the standards for the vendor records. Discovery records for DDA are handled within CARS.
- Providing, maintaining and troubleshooting electronic access to UCSD licensed content for the University campus (includes UCSD Health System) and UCSD faculty, staff and students using the UCSD secure network from remote locations.
- Interlibrary Loan (Lending and Borrowing) and Document Delivery from UC collections to UCSD patrons.
- Coordinate payment for purchased and licensed content in concert with Library Financial Services.
- Proactively provide data and analysis for library senior leadership and campus stakeholders.
- Receiving and disposition of gifts of books, journals and media from donors.
- Actively participate in responding to patron questions regarding our services.

Compensation: Salary and level of appointment in the Librarian series commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the University of California pay scales.

• MLS/MLIS or equivalent advanced degree. Other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services may be substituted.
