Position description

Located on Kumeyaay territory in the San Diego - Tijuana border region, The Design Lab at UC San Diego (http://designlab.ucsd.edu) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral scholar fellowship position to conduct research on topics related to urban planning and design. The Design Lab at the University of California is an interdisciplinary unit that works with all departments and divisions of the University including (but not restricted to) Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Public Health and Human Longevity Science, Medicine, Rady School of Management, and Social Sciences. The lab fosters research that centers people and communities in addressing complex, socio-technical problems by working with departments and divisions throughout the University.

The official postdoctoral scholar fellowship appointment will be through the UC San Diego Urban Studies and Planning department. The postdoctoral scholar will work under the supervision of Dr. Mai Thi Nguyen, Director of the Design Lab, and Professor of Urban Studies and Planning. ​​Her research focuses on social and spatial equity and examines planning and policy topics related to land use, housing, community and economic development, and climate change adaptation. She is passionate about designing cities that are equitable and resilient.

A highly qualified postdoctoral scholar is sought to contribute to all aspects of the research process including developing the research design and methods; data collection and analysis; writing manuscripts and grant proposals; and mentoring and supervising students and research assistants. We especially seek scholars who have training in advanced simulation and visualization tools, including but not limited to agent-based modeling, development of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Extended Reality, and AI. We are also interested in scholars who are engaging in major societal issues at the intersections of Blackness, Indigeneity, race, migration, gender, sexuality, disability, class and other manifestations of power and difference across space and geography.

This position comes with full benefits through the University of California, San Diego. The initial appointment is full time, for one year, with the opportunity of renewal for additional years. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A doctoral degree in urban planning or a related discipline, such as architecture, landscape architecture, environmental science, geography, public policy, sociology, urban studies, and others

Preferred qualifications

Preferred Candidates will have (a) strong communication and design skills, both oral and written; (b) high competence with quantitative data analysis, including experience with big and complex data, and a strong understanding of qualitative data analysis; (c) attention to detail and (d) the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team-based environment.
