Position description

Assistant Professor of Directing - UC San Diego

THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE at UC San Diego (http://theatre.ucsd.edu) invites theatre artists to apply for a tenure-track faculty position within the Ladder Rank Series. The academic appointment for this position will be for an Assistant Professor of Directing, effective July 1, 2022 and instruction beginning September 2022 (Fall Quarter).

The Department of Theatre and Dance at UC San Diego, located on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay nation, invites applicants who specialize in directing with a focus in Black performance modalities, and who can teach practice-based and theory courses in directing. As a department, we believe theatre and dance are transformational art forms that have the power and promise to change individuals and society. To amplify this mission, we welcome applicants who work across a range of perspectives and whose practice engages with (but is not limited to) one or many of the following lenses: directing for the 21st century, performance-making of the global majority and/or diasporic communities, history of directing, performance as it intersects with critical race theory, gender, and sexuality studies, trans and/or queer identity and experience, or other pertinent approaches to performance-making. The specific duties of the position will involve teaching a combination of 5 graduate and undergraduate courses, including small seminars in the candidate’s area(s) of specialization, and larger enrollment courses that reach across the department’s BA, MFA, and PhD communities, as well as meet relevant Colleges’ G.E. requirements, along with committee service. Given the department's attention to production as curriculum, we are interested in recruiting and supporting an applicant who has a practice in directing and can mentor MFA and selected undergraduate students in that practice.
