Position description

The Department of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine ( and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the Division of Physical Sciences ( at UC San Diego invite applications for a cross-campus hire for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The focus of this search is in the broad area of Metabolism, Mitochondria Dynamics, and Human Diseases. Specific areas of interest are cellular and mitochondrial metabolism, metabolic flow analysis, proteomics, and intracellular imaging and tool development, including computational methods for image analysis and quantitative analysis of complex systems and large metabolomics datasets; cryoEM studies with emphasis on mitochondrial proteins.

Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the development of the large undergraduate pharmaceutical chemistry and biochemistry majors in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry including teaching lab and lecture courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

In addition, the selected candidate will demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education and have a well-articulated plan of contributing to programs that increase the access and success of underrepresented students and faculty in the sciences. The selected candidate will likely have already participated in, contributed to, or created such programs. The selected candidate will also have served as a role model in mentoring others, with a commitment to helping shape and expand the University's diversity initiatives (

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must have a demonstrated potential for a recognized program of excellence in both teaching and research.

The successful candidates must have a strong record of research accomplishment, an innovative research plan, and demonstrated ability or potential for excellence in teaching at the interface of biochemistry/biophysics and pharmacology. In addition, candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education and have a well-articulated plan of contributing to programs that increase the access and success of underrepresented students and faculty in the sciences.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Candidates must have received their PhD in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, or a closely related field before July 1, 2022.
