ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UC SAN DIEGO – Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position pursuing innovative research in geophysical fluid dynamics. The target research area is theoretical work on oceanic flows that are directly affected by rotation and stratification. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work advances dynamical understanding, supported by numerical modeling, or analysis of observations, or laboratory experiments.
We seek an outstanding scientist/educator to establish a vigorous research program and provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise at SIO and other UC San Diego departments. SIO is a world-renowned center of oceanographic, atmospheric, biological, and solid earth research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs. SIO is part of the University of California, San Diego, which is one of the top research universities in the world. Geophysical fluid dynamics has been identified as high-priority long-term need for our Climate-Ocean-Atmosphere Program. The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong extramurally supported research program that complements existing physical oceanography research at SIO. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to teaching the Physical Oceanography curriculum for graduate and undergraduate students.

Salary will be consistent with the applicant’s qualifications and experience and with University of California pay scales.
A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physical oceanography or a relevant field is required at time of application.
Strong potential for development of a vigorous, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program and associated scholarly impact, together with evidence of service and broader contributions to diversity, leadership activities, and other items that will contribute positively to departmental welfare are preferred. In addition, documentation of strong interest and any history of achievement in mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs is valued.
