The effort for this position may range from 50%-100% time based on availability of funding.
The Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is seeking an experienced research scientist to hold a leadership role in the laboratory of Dr. Pieter Dorrestein. The Dorrestein laboratory has made major contributions to the understanding of mass spectrometry data and development mass spectrometry data analysis ecosystems.
The successful candidate will function independently and have oversight responsibility for their research program. The research will be the development of new computational/algorithmic solutions for the analysis of the chemistry associated with untargeted metabolomics data. Further development of approaches to integrate with other omics data and creating community analysis infrastructure/ecosystems will be a key part of this position. On behalf of the PI, the Research Scientist will be part of the team and help in directing the work of a midsized to large lab, offer significant innovative contributions to all project designs, support the mentorship and training to members of the collaborative mass spectrometry innovation center, including visitors, problem solve, analyze and integrate data, and write up and present results.
The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with the wider community and to publish papers. There is no teaching requirement, however outreach in form of workshops, office hours for the analysis ecosystem users and responding to infrastructure forums will be expected. The successful candidate will also write proposals for funding of both their own projects and/or in collaboration with the PI.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on published University of California pay scales. Doctorate degree or its equivalent to its field of study.
Appointment level is dependent on academic experience, scholarly achievements, and the needs of Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Ability to direct mid-sized to large laboratory.
Experience in mentorship and training to laboratory members.
Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong foundation in computational mass spectrometry and computational infrastructure building.
- Postdoctoral or equivalent experience, a commitment to a research program, funding, strong publication record, experience and interest in mentoring/training, and a commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
- Demonstrated experience in the field of computational mass spectrometry with a breadth of experience in human, animal and environmental data.
- Experience in Python is desired.
- Flexibility to accommodate development of key areas, facilitate experiments and grant deadlines and will be willing to learn and develop new skills.
