The Department of Structural Engineering at UC San Diego (https://structures.ucsd.edu/) seeks candidates for the position of Project Scientist (non-tenured Assistant/Associate) to lead the research operations and implementation of innovative structural testing methods at the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center.
The Englekirk Structural Engineering Center is home to the Large High-Performance Outdoor Shake Table (LHPOST6), the largest 6-DOF shake table in the US, and the Blast Simulator Facility, among other structural and geotechnical testing facilities. The mission of the Center is to provide the structural engineering community with a world-class testing facility producing high-quality experimental data as well as consultation on experimental design and training/education. The LHPOST6 is currently a national shared-use experimental facility as part of the National Science Foundation-supported Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program (http://nheri.ucsd.edu/).
The selected candidate will contribute to and support the laboratory's research mission and attract and manage experimental programs from the industry. Research expertise in structural dynamics, experimental mechanics, and controls, particularly in structural and/or geotechnical engineering and seismic qualification testing, is desired. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in the operation of servo-hydraulic control systems and data acquisition/instrumentation systems (including sensor technology) and also demonstrate knowledge of modern cloud computing for data exchange, storage, retrieval, and post-processing. Duties require excellent verbal and written skills to prepare formal reports and presentations at workshops and conferences, and proficiency in dynamic scheduling and budgeting methods to allow smooth collaboration with national partners. Furthermore, the candidate must demonstrate quality interpersonal skills and is expected to have the ability to work and thrive in a team environment. This position may involve the supervision of one or more development engineers/technicians at Center.
A doctoral degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, mechatronics, or a related field is required by the time of appointment. At UC San Diego, Project Scientists are academic researchers who are expected to make significant and creative contributions to a research program. They are not required to carry out independent research or develop an independent research program but are expected to engage in creative research and publications under a Faculty member's supervision associated with the Center.
An earned doctoral degree or advancement to candidacy in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or structural engineering.
Strong, proven knowledge and experience in operation of servo-hydraulic actuators and control systems. Operation of data acquisitions systems and installation of sensors. Strong communication and technical writing skills.
Experience in hybrid simulation. Demonstrated project management skills and ability to work in interdisciplinary teams. Candidates with experience with or willingness to engage in activities that contribute to diversity and inclusion are especially encouraged to apply.
