Position description

The Department of Pediatrics (http://www.pediatrics.ucsd.edu) and the Nizet Lab for Bacterial Pathogenesis and Innate Immunity Research at the University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body are seeking an Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist.

The Project Scientist will be expected to conduct independent research in collaboration, as well as working on existing and new research programs in the group. In addition, the project scientist will work on the application of molecular microbiology and immunology techniques to the study of drug resistant pathogens, in particular Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, including studies of virulence determinants, host responses, and novel antibiotic and vaccine development.

In addition to research, the position requires publication of research results, presentation at conferences, participation in group meetings, supervision of technicians, grant writing, and submission of research reports to sponsors.

Candidates must have a PhD in the field of bacteriology or host-pathogen interactions and must have at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience and evidence of high quality first author publications in leading subspecialty or general science journals.

Candidates with proven capabilities of collaborative research, experience with murine models of infection, experience in handling of biosafety level 2 (BSL2) bacterial pathogens, and facility with human immune cells and tissue culture are preferred. Candidates with a demonstrated ability to obtain funding (including fellowships, travel awards, and funding proposals) are also preferred.

Appointment will be at Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist level based on background and years of experience.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
