Position description

The Section of Cell & Developmental Biology in the Division of Biological Sciences is conducting an open search for Project Scientists (non-tenured, Assistant, Associate or Full level). At UC San Diego, Project Scientists are academic researchers who are expected to make significant and creative contributions to a research team but are not necessarily leaders of the research team. They are not required to carry out independent research or develop an independent research reputation but will publish and carry out research or creative programs with supervision by a member of the Professor or Professional Research series. University and public service are encouraged but not required and they do not have formal teaching responsibilities. Appointments and duration vary depending on the length of the research project and availability of funding. Research topics address studying the mechanisms by which cells assemble and function, and how these cells are sculpted into multicellular organisms. These include but are not limited to: mechanisms of protein degradation, nucleocytoplasmic transport, and cell migration, gene expression, mechanisms that guide the morphogenesis of tissues, organs and organisms, stem cells in development and regeneration, and the ability of cells and tissues to repair themselves. Models range from yeast to mammals.

The Division of Biological Sciences at UCSD is a vibrant center of scientific discovery, innovation, and collaboration. Our large research base spans many areas of biology. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Cell & Developmental Biology or related field. Appointment level is dependent on academic experience, scholarly achievements, and the needs of Cell & Developmental Biology. Preferred qualifications include postdoctoral or equivalent experience, a commitment to a research program, experience and interest in mentoring/training, and a commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: cells assembly and function, multicellular organism development, protein degradation, nucleocytoplasmic transport, cell migration, gene expression, cell morphogenesis, or stem cell development and regeneration.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

Initial review of applications will commence on September 1, 2020 and will remain open until filled based on the on-going needs in the Section of Cell & Developmental Biology.
