Description

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position from candidates in the areas of Energy Systems.

The MAE department seeks candidates who are pursuing innovative interdisciplinary research in the technology and systems challenges of deep decarbonization of the energy system. Example areas include but are not limited to electric grid operation with high penetration levels of renewable energy and storage (stochastic optimal load flow and unit commitment, state estimation); engineering aspects of systems-level solutions such as forecasting, energy storage, and demand response (e.g. coordination of distributed energy resources, learning theory, data analytics); engineering strategies for flexible thermo-electric systems (e.g. power plant flexibility, long-duration thermal storage), development and deployment of carbon capture and sequestration or direct air capture of CO2. We are particularly interested in candidates whose interests cover multiple technologies and their local or global impacts in connection to complex energy systems as opposed to candidates whose research is focused on energy policy. Successful candidates will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment in the department and across the university campus.

The required job duties include developing an excellent research program, teaching university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and service activities. As such, successful faculty candidates will demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in their research area. In addition, preferred candidates must be committed to increasing diversity and inclusion and have a desire to participate in the School's diversity initiatives.

A Ph.D. degree is required in the area of Engineering or a related discipline at the time of application.

We especially welcome candidates who have contributed to programs that increase the access and success of underrepresented students or faculty in engineering and who are committed to, and experienced in, building an excellent and diverse academic environment.

Rank of position is at the Assistant Professor level.

Salary: Level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications; salary based on UC pay scales and market conditions.

Closing Date: Applications received by the initial review date will be given full consideration. Applications received after this date will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled.

To Apply: Please submit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae with complete publication list and names of three references, a statement of research and teaching interests, a separate statement describing past experience in activities that promote diversity and inclusion and/or plans to make future contributions .

Applicants should summarize their past or potential contributions to diversity. See our Faculty Equity site and Divisional Guidelines for more information.
