Position description

The Department of Emergency Medicine (http://emergencymed.ucsd.edu/Pages/default.aspx) at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body invites applications from outstanding candidates for a Ladder-Rank appointment with the UCSD School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine with a specific focus on Geriatric emergency care and research.

The Department currently operates two Emergency Departments with a combined census of 70,000 patients annually (level 1 trauma center and academic medical center), with a four-year EM residency program (11 residents/year), teaching programs for 1st through 4th year medical students, and robust fellowship programs in Toxicology, Hyperbarics, EMS, Clinical Informatics, Ultrasound, Pediatric EM (and Clinical Research. The Department provides excellent opportunities for clinical service, teaching, and research at one of the nation's top-ranked Medical Schools and one of the most academically productive Departments of Emergency Medicine in the country. In addition, the Department has strong inter-departmental collaborations across campus with the Division of Geriatrics, Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and soon to open School of Public Health.

The UCSD Department of Emergency Medicine is a leader in the developing field of Geriatric acute and emergency care having established the region’s only level 1 accredited Geriatric Emergency Department (GED). The Department has multiple funded collaborations ongoing with the Gary and Mary West Health organization focused on improving the care of seniors through clinical innovation, scholarly research and health policy initiatives. The successful candidate will be able to build on this success with the potential for additional collaborations with the Division of Geriatrics and other Departments in the School of Medicine, as well as across campus with the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering, and new School of Public Health.

Candidates must have an MD or PhD. Candidates with an MD must be board certified/board eligible in Emergency Medicine and have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.

Experience and interest in hyperbaric medicine, toxicology, ultrasound, critical care, informatics, EMS, or international emergency medicine is preferred.

Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor Rank based on candidate's experience and qualifications. Series will include 100% Ladder Rank or 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence with secured extramural funding.
