The Department of Medicine / Division of Biomedical Informatics (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/som/dbmi/Pages/default.aspx) and the Halicioğlu Data Science Institute (https://datascience.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California San Diego jointly is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invite applications for a faculty position in biomedical informatics at the level of tenure-track Assistant Professor and a commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education.
Successful candidates will be expected to interface with a diverse array of investigators on campus. Joint appointments with other departments will be supported. Leadership roles will be considered according to the candidates’ interests and prior accomplishments.

DBMI is seeking current and future leaders to direct research and/or develop service programs in the following areas, as well as to teach in our training programs:
• Clinical informatics
• Clinical research informatics
• Biomedical data modeling and ontologies
• Biomedical natural language processing and information retrieval
• Human computer interaction and usability
• Global health informatics
• Translational bioinformatics
DBMI is currently involved in several ambitious initiatives. Our team is creating privacy-preserving networks to share research data and techniques to perform distributed analytics to enable comparative effectiveness research. We are also developing infrastructure to allow researchers to find available biomedical data, working with collaborators from several institutions. Our current efforts focus on mining biomedical text, electronic health record (EHR) and ‘omics data, improving utilization of laboratory tests for clinical care, improving feedback of patient outcomes to clinicians, information retrieval, integrating genome and phenotypes in quantitative models, and studying robust methods of providing informed consent for research subjects. DBMI has a history of hosting large projects such as iDASH (integrating Data for Analysis, ‘anonymization,’ and SHaring), one of NIH-funded National Centers for Biomedical Computing (NCBC), and currently leads several others such as pSCANNER (patient-centered SCAlable National Network for Effectiveness Research, a PCORI-funded clinical data research network covering over 21 million patients and 10 health systems, and the NIH-funded California Precision Medicine Consortium. Additionally, the DBMI has a central role in clinical and research informatics at the UCSD Health System.
Funded with a $75M endowment, the mission of Halicioğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI) is to explore the scientific foundations for the new field of data science . These foundations include both the principles, methods , and tools that will enable us to understand the nature of digital data, and also the intersections between this new field and existing disciplines of human enquiry. HDSI is a new strategic academic institute tasked with hosting and coordination of Data Science research and education activities. Among HDSI academic programs are Data Science major and minor currently with nearly 600 undergraduate students.
Successful applicants will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate students with the Division of Biomedical Informatics and HDSI. All candidates are expected to establish a vigorous program of high-quality federally funded research.
Candidates must have a doctoral degree in biomedical informatics, computer science, or related disciplines or have a health sciences doctoral degree (MD, OD, DMD, PhD or equivalent) at the time of appointment. Candidates with an MD or equivalent degree must be board certified/board eligible in their area of specialty. Candidates with an MD must have certification and be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California. Candidates must have original, peer-reviewed publications (preferably first-authored). Strong management and interpersonal skills are required. Candidates must also have excellence and creativity in research and scholarship.
Candidates who have created or contributed to programs that aim to increase access and success of underrepresented students or faculty in the sciences, or have detailed plans to accomplish such goals are preferred. A strong record of extramural funding and teaching excellence is also preferred.
The Joint 50/50 Appointment will be in the Department of Medicine and HDSI at the Assistant Professor rank.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
