Position description

THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE at UC San Diego invites theatre artists to apply for a tenure-track faculty position in Lighting Design. The academic appointment for this position will be for an Assistant Professor beginning Fall Quarter 2020 as a core member of a professional design training program. The appointee will be expected to bring innovation to the teaching of lighting design at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, while continuing to build their professional career nationally and/or internationally.

This position requires active mentorship of students and the ability to teach a wide range of classes, ranging from the fundamentals of lighting design to advanced topics. Teaching activities include classroom instruction in studio seminars and lectures, supervising productions, mentoring, supporting student research and internships, as well as collaborating on curriculum development, season planning and recruitment with department faculty. Additionally, the appointee will be expected to participate as member of the campus community on committees at both departmental and university levels.

Applicants should possess an MFA or equivalent professional experience in lighting design prior to the start of appointment

The committee will assess each application for:

  • A history of productions at the national level
  • Evidence of continuing creative activity
  • Evidence of teaching potential and/or 1-2 or more years experience teaching courses
  • evidence of superb teaching potential at the university level in lighting design and/or related fields, such as video and projection design, architectural, installation, or industrial design.

The applicant should demonstrate familiarity with digital technologies related to lighting design, such as relevant modeling software.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications based on University of California pay scales.
