The Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (https://medschool.ucsd.edu/vchs/) is committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body invites applications for the role of Founding Dean of Public Health.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the Dean will be responsible for the launching the School of Public Health and overseeing its management, academic planning, budget, personnel, resource allocation, and programs. The Dean will play a major role in the planning and development of the academic curriculum and research portfolio. Sufficient infrastructural support will be provided to allow the Dean to maintain an individual research program. Given the interdisciplinary nature of education and research at UC San Diego, there will be opportunities to catalyze interactions among programs and foster a culture of learning across the continuum of biomedical research and education, including in partnership with the School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Jacobs School of Engineering, Rady School of Management, and other campus partners.
UC San Diego Health Sciences is a $2 billion dollar-plus organization encompassing 18 departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated to fulfilling the Health Sciences’ tripartite missions of innovative research, education, and clinical care.
In 2018, UC San Diego submitted a proposal to establish an innovative, 21st century School of Public Health. Our vision is to incorporate a comprehensive and novel range of expertise across the campus by fostering extensive education and research partnerships, leveraging the many existing outstanding traditional public health oriented faculty and programs, and better engaging the University’s world-class strengths in non-traditional state of-the-art public health domains. These non-traditional strengths include expertise in innovative technologies (person, home, and community based), in climate change, engineering, information technology, data sciences, as well as the social sciences and humanities.
The proposed School of Public Health would provide a central point for connection and fostering collaboration within the University community and its partner institutions across the San Diego region. Situated within Health Sciences, the School would more directly bridge the continuum of the UC San Diego’s biomedical, clinical, population health, social science, and engineering expertise with public health.
UC San Diego seeks candidates whose leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research, and/or community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. Ability to represent the Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences to campus and external constituencies credibly, reliably, effectively, and tactfully. The successful candidate will be able to prioritize, grow, and support the current excellence and advance methods of public health education; and create opportunities to accelerate innovation and research. The incumbent will also identify additional recruitments to help grow scholarly activities in support of an overall strategic vision. The incumbent will have a clear commitment to excellence in the education and mentorship of trainees. A high level of conceptual and strategic thinking and a strong commitment to research, teaching, and public service.
As with similar roles, the Dean is expected to abide by UC San Diego’s Guidelines for Health Sciences Leaders, including in the areas of faculty recruitment, diversity, service, and other policies and regulations.
• Outstanding academic record with experience as a senior administrator in an academic or nonprofit environment.
• Dynamic leadership skills
• Personal record of distinguished scholarly accomplishments in a field of public health.
• History of fostering career development for early and mid-stage faculty across multiple disciplines.
• Terminal degree (PhD, DSc, DrPH, MD, or related degrees) in public health or related field. Candidates with an MD must be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the California Medical Board.
• Experience leading a large academic department with multiple divisions.
• Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the School.
Appointment will be at the Full Professor Rank based on candidate's experience and qualifications. Series will include 100% Ladder Rank or 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence with secured extramural funding.
