Position description

The Program in Japanese Studies (http://japan.ucsd.edu/) within the Institute of Arts and Humanities (http://iah.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for full-time and part-time lecturer positions in Japanese language starting July 1, 2020. Appointment(s) may be part-time, full-time, quarterly, annual, or biennial, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability.

Qualified candidates must have native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English and an M.A. in linguistics, Japanese language, education, foreign language pedagogy, and/or other language education-related areas. Qualified candidates also must have at least five years of experience in teaching all levels of Japanese language courses (including as a teaching assistant) and in supervising and training teaching assistants. A Ph.D. is desirable, but not required.

The successful candidate is expected to work with existing faculty members to design and develop content-based courses, thematic-based courses and/or Japanese language for special purposes courses. The Program in Japanese Studies coordinates a variety of campus offerings related to the culture, history, political economy, and language of Japan and offers students the opportunity to major or minor in Japanese Studies. It offers multiple levels of Japanese language courses, including advanced Japanese and Japanese for Professional Purposes

Salary is commensurate with teaching experience and is based on University of California salary scales.
