Description

The Department of Neurosciences at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) (http://neurosciences.ucsd.edu/) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body and is recruiting for faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level.

The Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study (ADCS) is a growing, progressive, multi-center clinical trials consortium created to provide an operational framework for large scale Alzheimer's disease research projects and consists of 7 cores, 22 committees, 35 research sites that are members of the consortium/Steering Committee, and an additional 40 or more research sites located across the U.S. and Canada that participate in one or more clinical trials coordinated by the ADCS. The ADCS is funded by federal and private grants, contracts, and gift support. The ADCS is a unique coordinating center (ARO) at UCSD, which collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to forward its mission to discover, develop, and test, new drugs to treat patients with AD. Total annual funding for its peer reviewed, foundation, and industry sponsored trials, ranges between $15M and $25M. The ADCS consists of a broad and diverse group of world-renowned faculty, researchers, and students, who share a common goal to improve the lives of families affected by Alzheimer's Disease.

The ADCS is part of the UCSD commitment to excellence in ADRD. It has one of the longest funded Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers and has leading programs in basic and clinical research into the cause, effects, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative disorder. Its excellence is further enhanced by strong partnerships with scientists from the Salk Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, and the Sanford-Burnham Institute.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent extramurally funded research program to advance the ADCS mission and to provide academic leadership within the ADCS expanding its interests and capabilities.

This role will include serving as the ADCS Associate Director supporting both the internal activities of the coordinating center, including overseeing its 7 cores as well as leading activities designed to advance its multi-center clinical trials pipeline. This faculty member will join the leadership team of the ADCS including its Director, and its External Associate Directors. The candidate will focus efforts on bringing in opportunities for new programs including leading the ADCS Compound Selection Committee (this committee reviews, vets, and assesses new opportunities) and meeting with academic investigators, biotechnology sponsors, and others, to review and maturate ideas into potential programs to add to the ADCS portfolio of clinical trials. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with a large group of scientists and clinicians through the ADCS in the UCSD Department of Neurosciences.

Teaching and mentorship opportunities will be available in the School of Medicine and in various Graduate Programs, including the highly-rated UCSD Graduate Program in Neurosciences.

Candidates must have a PhD and/or MD degree or equivalent. Candidates with an MD degree must be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the California Medical Board, have completed Neurology or Geriatric Medicine training, and be Board eligible or Board certified in Neurology or Geriatric Medicine. Candidates with an MD degree musthave completed Fellowship training in Alzheimer's disease or a related specialty, or have a track record of expertise in the area.

Candidate must have demonstrated scientific expertise in neurodegenerative dementias, clinical trials design, methodology, and conduct, with established expertise in one or several of the following: neurobiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, neuroimaging, biomarkers, or behavioral neurology/cognitive neuroscience, related to Alzheimer's disease and related disorders at the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study.

Experience conducting Alzheimer's Disease clinical trials as Principal Investigator is preferred.

The appropriate series and appointment at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.
