The Design Lab at UC San Diego, in collaboration with departments in the Jacobs School of Engineering, seeks candidates for tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor rank. The Design Lab at UC San Diego is a new initiative, established by the Chancellor to become a major international center for human-centered design, with the focus upon design as a way of thinking, especially dealing with a people-centered approach to complex sociotechnical systems.
The Design Lab works with departments and divisions throughout the University. This ad welcomes applicants for a position in a department in the Division of Social Sciences, including Cognitive Science and Psychology. Companion ads are available for the School of Medicine and Jacobs School of Engineering.
Assistant Professor candidates must have completed a terminal degree--such as a PhD, MD or equivalent doctoral degree, or relevant terminal master's degree and show great promise in teaching, service and research. Preferred candidates will have published human-centered research (broadly construed) in conference and/or journal articles in highly-regarded peer-reviewed venues; be able to demonstrate the potential for teaching excellence as they will be expected to supervise and teach graduate and undergraduate students in design-related courses; demonstrate the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity; and contribute to a campus climate that supports equity, inclusion, and diversity. An interdisciplinary perspective and experience with multiple methodologies is highly valued.
The successful applicant will be expected to establish a vigorous program of high-quality funded design and social science research. Potential domains for human-centered design research include imaging and sensors, real-world usage in health & other domains, human-robot interaction, cyber-physical systems, medical devices, design tools for mass customization, human-computer interaction, visualization, crowd-sourcing, social computing, and engineering systems & operations. Other relevant areas are welcomed.
