Part time non-tenure track lectureships with the Revelle College, Humanities Program at UC San Diego will be available for the 2019-2020 academic year (if needed, applicants may be considered for the current 2018-19 academic year). Appointments vary from one to three quarters. Our ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. (must be conferred by June 30, 2019) awarded for work in a humanistic field and a record of excellent teaching interdisciplinary courses in history, philosophy, and literature, with a focus on major aspects of the Western humanistic tradition and demonstrated an assured ability to make challenging texts fully accessible to undergraduate students. Our ideal candidate would also have demonstrated strong leadership or commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting. The Humanities Program (http://revelle.ucsd.edu/humanities/index.html) offers interdisciplinary courses in history, philosophy, and literature, with a focus on major aspects of the Western humanistic tradition. In these courses, students examine the development of a wide variety of ideas and forms ofexpression that exert a major influence on modern America. Through lectures and class discussions, and through the writing of essays, students learn to interpret literary, historical, and philosophical texts and to conduct independent critical assessment of documents and ideas. The sequence of courses, Humanities 1 through 5, meets the humanities and writing requirement of Revelle College. Instruction in university-level writing is part of all five courses, but students in Humanities 1 and 2 (six units each) receive intensive writing instruction. Revelle College, the first college at UC San Diego, was founded in the early 1960's when nationally the Great Books Programs, piloted by The University of Chicago and Columbia University, influenced Humanities curricula; and a post-Sputnik resurgence of Science and Mathematics shaped Universities' technical programs. The original Revelle College faculty believed that the educated American should be acquainted with the specific and fundamental disciplines: all graduates should know some of the literature, art, science and social issues that define our culture.
