Position description

We invite applications for an Associate Professor position in the Cognitive Science Department (http://cogsci.ucsd.edu).

We are looking for candidates who ask interesting questions regarding cognition and specialize in methods involving human subjects. We are especially interested in scientists who incorporate computational methods and/or systems-level approaches into their investigations of cognitive phenomena. The successful candidate will be expected to create an independent research program, and supervise trainees at all levels, including undergraduate and graduate students.

At UC San Diego, the Department of Cognitive Science department is truly interdisciplinary and has experienced substantial, rapid growth in recent years. Over one third of our faculty have joined the department within the last five years. Since the Fall of 2014 the number of enrolled undergraduates in the department has grown from 600 to nearly 2200. In that same time, Cognitive Science has helped develop entirely new majors and several interdisciplinary research centers, including Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience, Design, and Data Science. We place a strong emphasis on teaching and commitment to undergraduate education.

Cognitive Science faculty have research interests in a diverse set of phenomena, including affect, cognitive development, creativity, decision making, individual differences, executive function, gesture, language, learning and memory, math, music perception, reasoning, and social interaction. We often combine multiple methodological and theoretical approaches, including behavioral neuroscience, comparative cognition, computational epigenomics, computational neuroscience, control theory, data science, electrophysiology, experimental psychology, field work, genomics, image processing, linguistic methodologies, machine learning, neuroimaging, and psychophysics.

The preferred candidate will have strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity.

To apply for the Associate Professor position (with tenure): Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree in their area of expertise; at minimum, 4 years of academic teaching experience; have successfully obtained at least 1 competitive research grant as the principal investigator; and have demonstrated contributions to cognitive neuroscience (construed broadly). The successful candidate will be expected to: teach undergraduate and graduate courses in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience courses and/or related topics; supervise students in these areas; and conduct extramurally funded research. An interdisciplinary perspective and experience with multiple methodologies is highly valued.

Candidates should submit, via online application to https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF01905 (a) a short cover letter describing background and interests, (b) vita, (c) research statement, (d) teaching statement, (e) reprints of up to four representative publications, (f) personal statement summarizing their contributions (or potential contributions) to diversity and leadership (http://facultyequity.ucsd.edu/Faculty-Applicant-C2D-info.asp), (g) documentation of teaching evidence, (h) contributions to the cognitive neuroscience field as evidenced by scholarship and leadership, (i) a minimum of five independent referee names, (provide name, title, address and email) to https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF01905

Appointments will begin July 1, 2019. Salary is commensurate with experience and based on the University of California pay scales.

Review of applications will start on November 17, 2018 and will continue until position is filled.
